A panel discussion will take place at 198 Contemporary Arts. Joining Brett will be photographer and lecturer Paul Lowe, and photographers Simon Norfolk and Wendy Pye.
The discussion will focus on places in nature that have a hidden, dangerous, man-made element to them. These places allow us to realize that at one point in our evolution as a species, nature was inhospitable and dangerous. Now nature resembles the pre-packaged, safe wilderness we encounter in most areas of the Western world. We have lost the inherent fear of nature our ancestors had only a century or so ago. When we as photographers go to photograph places that manifest this age-old fear, how does it represent itself in our photography and how does it transmit onto our persona? Do we bring that fear back or leave it there? Do we feel that our work is able to transmit that feeling?
